Dark Side Tribal Belly Dance is a troupe dedicated to American Tribal Style®
and Tribal fusion belly dance.
Our Mission: We dance to celebrate life, all of life. All that life is and is not, the highs and the lows, the light and heavy, the joys, the sorrows, the ups and downs, outside and inside, the bright side and the
Dark Side. We hope to celebrate with you.
The Dark Side Dancers are committed to sharing the joy and vitality of belly dance. We welcome all to join the dance! Through
instruction,
performance, and regular
belly dance haflas (parties) we want to use this social form of dance to
create a community that fosters friendship and self-expression.
A brief description of American Tribal Style Style (ATS®). American Tribal Style belly dance was created in the late 1980's by
Carolena Nericcio, director of FatChanceBellyDance Style® As the name implies, American Tribal Style makes no claim to represent traditional belly dance , but ATS is clearly inspired by regional, social dances originating from the Middle East, North Africa and India. The dance movements, steps and formations of ATS evolve as dancers continue to reinterpret the traditional belly dances as well as modern belly dance forms including caberet and ATS itself. American Tribal Style centers around group improvisation, with dancers moving together in unison and inter

acting with each other through the ATS vocabulary of movements and cues. This interaction creates a vibrant and powerfully moving dance form in which the tribe of dancers connects deeply with each other as well as the audience.
Tribal fusion is simply a fusion of ATS belly dance with other dance forms. A very exciting and popular form of Tribal-fusion is the hip-hop stylization of the ATS movements. Dark Side Tribal is exploring this style of Tribal-fusion as well as a fusion of West African dance movements with ATS.
Experience American Tribal Style Belly dance and Tribal-fusion:
Dark Side Tribal's Heather Pund and Virginia Hojas offer
instruction in American Tribal Style for both beginners and intermediate/advanced students. We also welcome other dancers from near and far to teach
workshops in Bloomington so that we may participate in the on-going evolution of tribal-fusion belly dance. We perform regularly at community events in Bloomington and are also available for hire. DST has danced at Tribal Revolution in Chicago, IL; Tribal Pura in Bloomington, IN; Axis of Evil, Bloomington's Goth night; the Pride Film Festival of Bloomington; Luna Festival Women's Arts Show; and Hatije's Hafla Fundraiser for Middle-Way House.
